Roots can easily be divided (Cullina 2000); rhizome knotty, stout and thick (Fernald 1950; Gleason and Cronquist 2003), forming shoots at each (Sperka 1973).

Seed output low (Gleason and Cronquist 2003).

Polygonatum canaliculatum is a tretraploid (2n=40) of the diploid P. biflorum (2n=20).
