Stems arise from a single perennial crown (where the above ground structures meet the roots) (Runkel and Bull 2009).
The small seeds are abundant, but long distance dispersal is limited. Seeds are easy to propagate, and 29 of 30 large transplants survived the first growing season 25 of 29 of these flowered in the second growing season. The equivalent numbers for smaller transplants 30 of 30 for first year survival and 6 of 30 flowering. Self-sows readily (Mabry 2011).
