Common Name(s):
Sedge species
Notes
Germinating some sedge species can be complex. For oak sedge (Carex pennsylvania) it involved removing the perigynium (bladder like sac that adhers to the hard pericarp of the achene), after-ripening (dry storage), followed by cold stratification, and exposure to light (McGinnis and Meyer 2011). A similar strategy resulted in successful germination of long-beaked sedge (Carex sprengelii) (Balestrieri-Fox, personal observation).
