Produces limited seed; low to no vegetative spread, rhizome stout (Fernald 1970).

Mature transplants added to a woodland degraded by cattle grazing in Wisconin disappeared within eight years (Ellarson and Craven (1982). However, seedlings transplanted into the field had 50% survival after 7 years (Mottl et al. 2006), suggesting that transplanting could still be a successful method of re-introduction.
