Limited to moist open woods and other moist open places (Eilers and Roosa 1994). Germination requires light (Cullina 2000).

Seed output high; no vegetative spread (stems arise from basal offshoots (Fernald 1950); root system fibrous (Runkel and Bull 2009).

Seedlings transplanted into the field had 0.0% survival after two years, with the field site a well drained open woods (Mottl et al. 2006).
